- > 'components'?
-
- Well, DEU is for creating editing / creating level maps - nothing else. In fact, I'm
- not even that sure you can create them from scratch. It seems you have to edit or wipe
- an older map in the wad like e1m1.
-
- DEU cannot edit graphics, replace graphics, or compile new WADs from individual components
- like samples, sprites & maps. You need NewWadTool or some equivalent for that job.
-
- > Not to have to use a PC is nice option. ;-)
-
- For more than just the obvious reasons...
-
- 1) you loose the DOS restriction of 640k for DEU - which means only about 200k of ram
- for new levels. Phil has been making levels for the PC and this has been causing real
- problems as 200k is just not enough for all those sidedefs.
-
- 2) You don't have to use the alternative - WinDEU. This removes the 640k limit, but
- replaces it with that 'Windows' thing that's not exactly ace for running Doom and other
- games. This practice leads to problems with Windows AND Doom, and if you decide to quit
- Windows to run Doom after every change made, you have to put up with even longer turnaround
- times.
-
- On a Falcon, you can just switch in a matter of a few seconds, and you can have 4 megs or
- more to play with for level maps.

-
- Isn't that a contradiction in terms Magnus? :)
-
- NewWadTool is better off being fast - there's a lot of scrolling text & page-flipping going
- on there, and you need to be able to switch to truecolour real fast for viewing the WAD
- entries. GEM doesn't fit the bill for any of these requirements, and so it will be a 640x480
- 4 colour custom-written interface - it will look almost identical to NWT on the PC. If you
- don't like that then you can always try writing your own! The more tools we have the better.
-

-
- That's only useful when using DEU. NWT is for replacing / importing / exporting wad entries and
- for creating new PWADs from IWAD parts before editing levels. Essential, but not exactly a
- realtime-requirement job.
-
- > What about WAD support in Apex 3.... :-)
-
- Better off with tools designed for the job - that way you can distribute source along with the
- binaries.
